[22:26] (Ricardo) Hum.
[22:27] (Ricardo) Maybe we could translate the lecture from Spanish to English, marcelo
[22:27] (marcelo) ah
[22:27] (marcelo) its a lecture going on?
[22:27] (marcelo) sorry
[22:27] (Ricardo) But I have to go in ten minutes :((
[22:27] (Ricardo) Yes marcelo :)
[22:28] (utopio) ok, let's translate :-)
[22:28] (Ricardo) It's about a portal that publishes stories about 'Linux enterprises' at South America that are getting success :)
[22:29] (Ricardo) utopio: go on :)
[22:29] (utopio) jeje my english it's not very good but i'll try
[22:30] (utopio) until now they have only said what ricardo said, so i'll begin translation from now, ok?
[22:31](MJesus)ok
[22:32] (utopio) on slide number 4 we see a model of the IT market (in SouthAmerica)
[22:39] (utopio) it is a pyramidal model were customers are under the IT market monopoly
[22:39] (utopio) in the upper part of the pyramid we can see the software producers
[22:39] (utopio) who are the ones who rule the market imposign their standards and models
[22:39] (utopio) by their side we can see the hardware manufacturers
[22:39] (utopio) who are usually associated with the first ones (the software manufacturers)
[22:40] (utopio) nder both of them there are the OEM manufacturers, distribution, and integration
[22:42](MJesus)
[22:40] (utopio) ussually know as the channel (or media)
[22:42](MJesus)
[22:41] (utopio) giving more strength to the piramidal structure
[22:43] (utopio) on one side there are the enterprises and institutions who work on education and entertainment
[22:44] (utopio) who are directly "feeded" by the manufacturers
[22:44] (utopio) On the other side we can found the mass media
[22:45] (utopio) who are ussually influenced by the manufacters
[22:46] (utopio) at the very botton there are the users, individual users or enterprises
[22:46] (utopio) it's not dificult to realise that there's not a real feedback
[22:47] (utopio) the top of the piramid only seeks their own interests
[22:48] (utopio) And there's not a real mechanism that allows the technology producers, to know the real needs of the users
[22:48] (utopio) all this is changing becouse opensource
[22:49] (utopio) opensource it's a movement made byt the users
[22:50](MJesus)next slide
[22:50] (utopio) we continue in next slide
[22:50] (utopio) where we can see a resume of the previous diagram
[22:51] (utopio) At the first point we can see that there exists an oligopoly structure
[22:52] (utopio) where there are lots of buyers but a few sellers
[22:52] (utopio) those sellers are going to have the control of the monopoly in the IT market
[22:53] (utopio) For example Microsoft it's a well know case
[22:53] (utopio) of a Software monopoly
[22:54] (utopio) Intel it's an example of the monopoly in the hardware market
[22:54] (marcelo) Intel is not a monopoly in the IT market.
[22:55] (utopio) Those two gigant fo the monopoly are who are goign to impose (the most of the times) the standards in the IT market
[22:55] (marcelo) look at Sun, Compaq (with Alpha), HP...
[22:55] (debUgo-) AMD aa64 =)
[22:57](MJesus)jr ayudara.,...
[22:57] (__jr) ok
[22:58] (utopio) si porfavor
[22:58](MJesus)a ver una cosa, vamos muy retrasados, por que no lees todo y haces un resumen en vez de hacerlo literal ?
[22:58] (utopio) jr sigue tu un poco please
[23:00] (__jr) so the main afected is the user of the technology
[23:00] (__jr) no matter if it is the end user or the company
[23:00] (__jr) let´s talk about pymes
[23:01] (__jr) small companies, cause they are the main affected
[23:01] (debUgo-) PYME == small and medium companies
[23:03] (__jr) when a technical change happens and they can fall more easily in an economical crisis
[23:03] (__jr) another important issue is the "oligopic" model
[23:04] (__jr) there is few technological feedback by the end user
[23:04] (marcelo) Transmeta is not in the IT market
[23:04](MJesus)is not a processor ?
[23:04] (__jr) all this model of monopoly is strengthen by the media
[23:05] (marcelo) its a processor for embedded stuff.
[23:05] (marcelo) Like notebooks.
[23:05] (__jr) and is easy to understan cause the monopolies pay for the spaces
[23:06] (marcelo) paisalinu, Crusoe market is not IT market.
[23:07] (marcelo) well
[23:07] (marcelo) go on with your talk
[23:07] (marcelo) :)
[23:07] (__jr) tats why is hard that exists objetivity in the media when they make a real analisys of information technology
[23:07] (__jr) next diapo
[23:08] (utopio) Slide 6
[23:08] (__jr) sorry but i don´t got any... :)
[23:08] (__jr) here we can see how free software can change all existents paradigms
[23:09] (__jr) and basically of philosophy GNU (free software)
[23:09] (__jr) of GNU we know their philosophical precepts
[23:10] (__jr) freedom of execution, study and development of the software
[23:11] (__jr) and free software can get rid of these paradigms because is made and consumed by users
[23:11] (__jr) the paradigms that must be changed are:
[23:12] (__jr) technical formation, media, merchandising methods and system development
[23:13] (__jr) they are key paradigms when we analyze the growing of free software in the market
[23:14] (__jr) cause these points give a sense of where to go to users and companies when they´re analyzing the technology to use
[23:15] (__jr) lets see the case of transmeta and their crussoe proccesor
[23:15] (__jr) a lot of companies wanted to include this new device in their labtops
[23:16] (__jr) mobile devices, not labtops
[23:17] (debUgo-) s/labtops/laptops/
[23:17] (__jr) but due to pressure by intel the including of crussoe its not happening now
[23:18] (__jr) we can nottice how intel still make pressure on the distributors thats why i include intel as a monopoly although i don´t want to be absolute
[23:19] (__jr) pressure exists in all possible ways, mainly economically
[23:20] (__jr) deliverers, not distributors, sorry
[23:20] (__jr) in diapo number 7 we can see
[23:20] (__jr) prejection about the growing of linux market
[23:21] (__jr) we can see the percent of growing about the technology of software
[23:22] (__jr) hardware, service merchandising and websites
[23:22] (__jr) big percentage, dued to the massive growing of linux market
[23:23] (__jr) the creation of new companies based on linux and the need of pymes to look for new choices, mainly economically and quality
[23:23] (__jr) to become competitive
[23:23] (__jr) lets see next slide
[23:24] (__jr) dued to the pyramidal model of Ti market
[23:24] (__jr) TI
[23:24] (__jr) linux users have some opportunities in that market
[23:25] (__jr) the most important is the reduced cost of property that free software has
[23:26] (__jr) and is not only about acquisition prices, but they have less stops, the costs associated to them are lessen, once configured is easy to administrate
[23:26] (__jr) free software save time and money
[23:27] (__jr) internet reduces it´s upgrades costs
[23:27] (__jr) and re training
[23:28] (__jr) all this means that the bases of these kind of bussiness are accesible by anyone
[23:28] (__jr) the structure cost is minimal
[23:28] (__jr) the users companies, small and medium ones
[23:29] (__jr) doesn´t have the team to get profits for these opportunities
[23:29] (__jr) their needs can be covered by linux
[23:29] (__jr) because they break paradigms of merchandising
[23:30] (__jr) linux have internet as its way of merchandising
[23:31] (__jr) that reduces cost of merchandising channels
[23:31] (__jr) the next opportunity is that with free software, linux can change it and addapt it to its clients needings
[23:31] (__jr) next slide
[23:31] (__jr) lets see the situation of PYMES and linux
[23:31] (__jr) the problematic of both is the same
[23:32] (__jr) linux users are PYMES
[23:32] (__jr) we must see this from both points of view
[23:32] (__jr) apply here what Socrates said
[23:32] (__jr) "Know yourself"
[23:33] (__jr) Whats a PYME?
[23:33] (__jr) is next slide we can see two definitions
[23:33] (__jr) INSEE national institute for statiscit and economic studies ( it's french) says
[23:34] (__jr) follows the criteria of employes number
[23:35] (__jr) are PYMES companies with less of a thousand employes
[23:35] (__jr) The CEPAL (latinamerican) says
[23:36] (__jr) just as says the association of financial executives of mexico
[23:36] (__jr) that PYMES are companies with less of 250 employes
[23:38] (__jr) that is a reflex of economical conditions of developed countries against those called "emerged economies"
[23:38] (__jr) next slide
[23:38] (__jr) Here we can see the importance of PYMEs in some Latinamerican countries
[23:39] (__jr) we can see that these economies are made in their 50% of small and medium companies
[23:39] (__jr) PYMEs are the core of economy
[23:39] (__jr) next slide
[23:40] (__jr) here we can see that PYMEs are struggling against a globalized market of high competition
[23:41] (__jr) we must say
[23:41] (__jr) that TI markets are becoming more selective
[23:42] (__jr) Clients have education and want the best
[23:42] (__jr) wanting solutions to their own need
[23:42] (__jr) More than selling products
[23:43] (__jr) now its required to sell solution with technical support in all the life period of the product
[23:44] (__jr) Clients and users needs a new model of make bussiness
[23:45] (__jr) the model is based mainly on internet
[23:45] (__jr) enterprising, not users
[23:46] (__jr) clients need to optimize their costs
[23:46] (__jr) have unified systems in their companies
[23:47] (__jr) and adapted to the proccess of their own bussiness
[23:47] (__jr) the main cause of PYMEs breakdown
[23:48] (__jr) which implies systems
[23:48] (__jr) is the less of study of the market and postioning
[23:48] (__jr) positioning
[23:49] (__jr) clients of these enterprises, and the enterprises itself are in a very bad situation
[23:50] (__jr) bad situation in human and techonlogical resources
[23:51] (__jr) some numbers reflex the failure of these companies
[23:51] (__jr) installing the techonlogy
[23:51] (__jr) technology
[23:52] (__jr) the problem is the less of timely preparation in those new technologies
[23:52] (__jr) with free software, enterprises can fill that hole
[23:53] (__jr) so the promising fields for linux enterprises
[23:53] (__jr) are among other
[23:53] (__jr) consultory
[23:55] (utopio) i continue
[23:56] (utopio) proyect integration
[23:57] (utopio) capacitation, tech support and ASP
[23:58] (utopio) with free software, becouse it follow stantards, the client assure their investment
[23:59] (utopio) they can get the maximun of the old hardware they have
[23:59] (utopio) the linux "enterprisers" can offer better solutions at lower cost
[00:00] (utopio) but they face problems that they need to overcome
[00:01] (utopio) the first big problem is capitalization and funding
[00:01] (utopio) the next one its the increasing fragmentation of the markets
[00:02] (utopio) it's not possible to sell cans anymore
[00:03] (utopio) In mexico we say: "the one who wants to embrace a lot, embraces a little (free translation)"
[00:03] (utopio) And the problem with some linux people is that
[00:04] (utopio) they try to take more market than they can deal with
[00:04] (utopio) or in the other hand, they can't find new markets with new possibilities
[00:04] (utopio) the competivity is overwhelming
[00:05] (utopio) and lot of people don't know how to promote themself
[00:06] (utopio) moreover there's a need of well formed (educated) people, and that the most difficult thing to have
[00:06] (utopio) becouse of that
[00:07] (utopio) we propose a bussines model
[00:08] (utopio) where we take advantage of the freedom of free software societys
[00:08] (utopio) in the bussines world
[00:08] (utopio) basicaly
[00:09] (utopio) this model consist in complement the talents of various companies
[00:10] (_jr) each one in their fields, ones are strong in merchandising, others programming, others in support, the idea is the creation of virtual associations, by project, it means don´t let to escape any demanding clients, make strong each other, that reduces the costs of all, because each company collaborates freely and look for their benefits too, the fruits of this project can be disclosured to the community, the email of the lecturer is juan.rosas@linuxalianza.com
