fernand0 | Hello |
---|---|
fernand0 | We are pleased to see you here again and to announce today our next |
fernand0 | speaker. |
fernand0 | He is Jerome Pansanel. He is working at the University of Strasbourg, |
fernand0 | France |
fernand0 | He's working since five years on the development and translation of free |
fernand0 | software for chemistry. He's also the coordinator of the Alchem.org |
fernand0 | Project, a project that aims to support the development of free (as in |
fernand0 | freedom) work in chemistry. |
fernand0 | He recently finished his Ph.D. on Chemistry. |
fernand0 | As usual, we will have a channel for questions and comments, #qc |
fernand0 | and we request volunteers to help with translation to Spanish in #redes |
fernand0 | His talk is entitled |
fernand0 | "The Alchem.org Project : a place for the development of free software in Chemistry". |
fernand0 | Dr. Pansanel ... |
Alchimist | thanks |
Alchimist | for this introduction |
Alchimist | I have divided this talk in two part |
Alchimist | First, I will present some good reasons to use Free (as in Freedom) Software in Sciences. |
Alchimist | Then, I will introduce the Alchem.org Project, a platform who support exchange between developers or users of chemistry-oriented software |
Alchimist | Why do you need the right to access and to modify the source code of scientific applications? |
Alchimist | 1. Scientific validation |
Alchimist | Each result of a calculation need to be proved and be reproduce. |
Alchimist | How to verify a result issue from a black box? |
Alchimist | How can you be sure to reproduce this result, if you don't known how it has been produce? |
Alchimist | The attitude, that consist to trust hidden process and to give credit to these results, |
Alchimist | is more close to religion than science. |
Alchimist | So, having the opportunity to study the source code permit to verify the unfolding of the program. |
Alchimist | In this way, the results are issued from a well-known and certified algorithm. |
Alchimist | |
Alchimist | 2. Accessibility is granted for everybody |
Alchimist | The free distribution of a software permit to a large number of people to access to a tool, |
Alchimist | with a minimal amount of money. |
Alchimist | This can lead to a better division of the budget of a laboratory |
Alchimist | (for example, you can give more fund to buy glassware) |
Alchimist | Someone add a good advice: |
Alchimist | free software can cost a lot. |
Alchimist | For example, when you need to teach a team to use new software. |
Alchimist | You must try to consider what will happen if you change your software. |
Alchimist | But the cost are the same if you change with another closed software |
Alchimist | 3. Adaptable for everybody |
Alchimist | As the source code is free, it can be modified by anyone to fit to the exact need of a labs. |
Alchimist | 4. Common tools |
Alchimist | Because free software can be modified and used by anyone, a large amount of developers canwork together on a project. |
Alchimist | We can compare this to scientific research, as results are often issued from collaboration between labs over the wolrd. |
Alchimist | Imagine the state of our technology without exchange between researcher and without the publication of review. |
Alchimist | 5. Permanence of the code |
Alchimist | When a company go bankrupt or decides to stop the development o a software, |
Alchimist | the only to be sure to be sure to have the possiblity to develop further this product, |
Alchimist | is to release this product as free software. |
Alchimist | A common problem is the choice of a license, but will not discuss within the talk. You can refer to this address to obtain a list of free software licenses and their desciption : |
Alchimist | http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html |
Alchimist | 6. Reliable products |
Alchimist | Free software are almost issued from a workgroup. As the code is available, it can be quickly corrected. |
Alchimist | This is make easier as it is simple to contact the main contributor of a project. |
Alchimist | (In general, you can find his address within the program or the source code) |
Alchimist | Some projects, who promote free software in Science, exist. |
Alchimist | (for example: |
Alchimist | http://www.openscience.org |
Alchimist | http://www.fsfeurope.org/fr/science |
Alchimist | http://bioinformatics.org |
Alchimist | http://www.linuxmednews.org, http://medecinelibre.nuxeo.org |
Alchimist | http://www.alchem.org |
Alchimist | I will now present, in a short time, the Alchem.org Project. |
Alchimist | (you can find a visual help on |
Alchimist | http://www.pansanel.net/umeet/img0.html |
Alchimist | (I hope that the download of the picture is not so slow, as they are near of 35kb) |
Alchimist | the alchem.org has been created for helping the development of chemistry-oriented free software |
Alchimist | This project is issued from a work, initiated by the FSF-Europe in 2001. |
Alchimist | At this time, we have formed a first group to list free software for science, and publish the result of our work on the web. |
Alchimist | (http://www.fsfeurope.org/fr/science) |
Alchimist | We have decided to create a dedicated project for chemistry, |
Alchimist | as it was really difficult to find information about free software in chemistry. |
Alchimist | The project has officially started in july 2003, with a conference in Metz (France). |
Alchimist | We want to offer three type of support for developers: |
Alchimist | a databank of algorithm for chemistry-oriented software |
Alchimist | a board for annoucement |
Alchimist | a place where it is easy to find free software for chemsitry. |
Alchimist | It is more than a chemistry oriented freshmeat, |
Alchimist | as we want to create a miror, |
Alchimist | that contains the last snapshot of free software |
Alchimist | To search for chemistry software (to update our list), we are using some tools |
Alchimist | Freshmeat |
Alchimist | |
Alchimist | sal.kachinatech.com/ |
Alchimist | (Scientific application for Linux) |
Alchimist | linux4chemistry |
Alchimist | and other links |
Alchimist | Now, the most part of free chemistry-oriented software are listed |
Alchimist | I thank you for your attention, I will be pleased to answer your question |
