@xtingray | he he he... ok... so, it is time to change of language ;) |
@xtingray | well... here we go... |
@xtingray | Multimedia and Free Software |
@ChanGux | set xtingray language = english |
@xtingray | Intro... |
@xtingray | This is a little conference about some of the resources we can find about multimedia currently in the free/open source world. |
@xtingray | In the present, free software users miss a lot of tools for creating multimedia works, while users |
@xtingray | of propietary software already use, i mean, very professional frameworks as Adobe Flash or the new project of Microsoft: Expresion (http://www.microsoft.com/products/expression/en/default.aspx). |
@xtingray | We need open tools like that in the free world, we need rich open source format for multimedia |
@xtingray | files, and we need easy-to-use interface to create them, but the road we need to walk to reach that goals is just starting... |
@xtingray | What i pretend with this talk is to share my vision about what is the direction we have to start walking to make our multimedia dream comes true. |
@xtingray | I have to say too, i won't talk about the SWF format or any open source project related directly with that format, because it is not an standard and it is not an open format, often, i consider |
@xtingray | that is not the right way to bring multimedia to the Free Software users. |
@xtingray | People is trying to bring the SWF to the free platforms... in the other hand, i think we should to analyze it (because it have a pretty architecture) and then replace it for something open and free. |
@xtingray | First... |
@xtingray | What do we mean when we talk about multimedia? |
@xtingray | Quoting www.whatis.com, i found this: |
@xtingray | multimedia is more than one concurrent presentation medium (for example, on CD-ROM or a Web site). |
@xtingray | Although still images are a different medium than text, multimedia is typically used to mean the combination of text, sound, and/or motion video. |
@xtingray | Some people might say that the addition of animated images (for example, animated GIF on the Web) produces multimedia, but it has typically meant one of the following: |
@xtingray | * Text and sound |
@xtingray | * Text, sound, and still or animated graphic images |
@xtingray | * Text, sound, and video images |
@xtingray | * Video and sound |
@xtingray | * Multiple display areas, images, or presentations presented concurrently |
@xtingray | * In live situations, the use of a speaker or actors and "props" together with sound, images, and motion video |
* Chan[OFF] is away: I'm busy |
@xtingray | multimedia can arguably be distinguished from traditional motion pictures or movies both by the scale of the production (multimedia is usually smaller and less expensive) |
@xtingray | and by the possibility of audience interactivity or involvement (in which case, it is usually called interactive multimedia). |
@xtingray | Interactive elements can include: voice command, mouse manipulation, text entry, touch screen, video capture of the user, or live participation (in live presentations). |
@xtingray | Well, as you can see it, there are a lot of files that can be defined as multimedia. My talk is very specific about this subject. I want to focus in resources related with creating _interactive_ files which include text, graphics, sound and videos. |
@xtingray | Think for a second that you want to create some project as the propietary software "Encarta", but only using a GNU/Linux system as platform and free/open tools. How would you do it? |
@xtingray | Guess for a moment, you are an end-user... how would you do it? |
@xtingray | Second... |
@xtingray | Ok, let's see some open projects about multimedia, following the concept we defined previously. |
@xtingray | I guess, you already know some of them. |
@xtingray | 1. Blender |
@xtingray | Blender is the open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Available for all major operating systems under the GNU Public License. |
@xtingray | Official website: http://www.blender3d.org |
@xtingray | 2. Synfig |
@xtingray | Synfig is a powerful, industrial-strength vector-based 2D animation software package, designed from the ground-up for producing feature-film quality animation with fewer people and resources. |
@xtingray | Official website: http://www.synfig.com/ |
@xtingray | 3. Squeak |
@xtingray | Squeak is a modern, open source, highly portable, fast and full-featured implementation of the powerful Smalltalk programming language and environment. |
@xtingray | Squeak can present information in a variety of digital media formats (audio, video, interactivity, graphics, and animation) which provides creators various vehicles to enhance user comprehension. |
@xtingray | There are several sub-projects inside Squeak for specific multimedia subjects: |
@xtingray | Balloon: The underlying vector engine for 2D outline graphics. |
@xtingray | Balloon3D: The 3D extension of Balloon. |
@xtingray | Alice: The authoring tool designed for people without programming experience to build interactive 3D worlds (http://www.alice.org). |
@xtingray | There are another Squeak tools related to audio and video, so you can find additional information |
@xtingray | in the official Squeak website. Warning: there are many broken links in that url, but there another |
@xtingray | sites about this project. |
@xtingray | Official website: http://www.squeak.org/ |
@xtingray | The list of open projects do not finish here, but i just wanted to show you the most complete free applications in the moment. |
@xtingray | Third... |
@xtingray | What about open multimedia formats? |
@xtingray | SMIL |
@xtingray | The Synchronized multimedia Integration Language (SMIL, pronounced "smile") enables simple authoring of interactive audiovisual presentations. |
@xtingray | SMIL is typically used for "rich media"/multimedia presentations which integrate streaming audio and video with images, text or any other media type. |
@xtingray | SMIL is an easy-to-learn HTML-like language, and many SMIL presentations are written using a simple text-editor. |
@xtingray | Official website: http://www.w3.org/AudioVideo/ |
@xtingray | XIPH |
@xtingray | This is not an specific format, but i found this resource very interesting for this chat. |
@xtingray | The Xiph.Org Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to protecting the foundations of Internet multimedia from control by private interests. |
@xtingray | Our purpose is to support and develop free, open protocols and software to serve the public, developer and business markets. |
@xtingray | Official WebSite: http://www.xiph.org/ |
@xtingray | Quarter... |
@xtingray | What about the future of multimedia and opensource? |
@xtingray | If you visit the free/open source engine Freshmeat (www.freshmeat.net), for example, you will find |
@xtingray | in the multimedia section, a total of 6582 projects. |
@xtingray | But, even with that large number of tools, you won't find anything similar to Adobe Flash for creating multimedia files using an _open_format_. |
@xtingray | Which is very sad, if we think that currently |
@xtingray | there are great free applications to do other kind of tasks (think in OpenOffice for example). |
@xtingray | I think it is time to bring a real multimedia _multi-platform_ for the free world. And this means: |
@xtingray | - A very complete multimedia open format. I think SMIL is a good choice, but it must to grow up |
@xtingray | a lot. Specifications are public, so we can help a lot. |
@xtingray | - A comprensive IDE (Integrated Development Environment) with end-user interfaces to develop any |
@xtingray | kind of multimedia project, from a little animation to something complex as Encarta is. |
@xtingray | - Several language approach to allow programmers deal with interactive events behind the graphical |
@xtingray | interfaces (in the same way, phyton does it with Blender). |
@xtingray | - Free/Open players and plugin applications (i.e. web plugins) to execute the multimedia files. |
@xtingray | When you see the whole picture, you must to think that all this components have to be integrated. |
@xtingray | Let's dream for a while: |
@xtingray | The multimedia format will allow not only to include files as graphics (*.png,*.jpg,etc), sounds (*.ogg) and videos (*.mpg), but foreign scripting language sections too. |
@xtingray | So, programmers will |
@xtingray | always could extend that files with new actions every time they need it. |
@xtingray | Besides, the structure of the format will be modular, so you would can split a big project in several files to avoid heavy and slow performance when you want to see a large multimedia. |
@xtingray | The IDE have not to show you the same interface that Adobe Flash does, but it have to give you all the features, wizards and forms to build files in an easy way for end-users. |
@xtingray | It will include an |
@xtingray | Scripting editor for programmers, so, you could build a multimedia project cliking your mouse or |
@xtingray | just doing code directly. |
@xtingray | About the language approach, i consider, we have to think in several ways for coding files: |
@xtingray | - An open multimedia specific language. Something to do what ActionScript exactly does, but |
@xtingray | something free. We need to create it. |
@xtingray | - Extensions of scripting languages as python (ruby and others). As i said it before, think about |
@xtingray | the way blender and python works together. This will be the same. |
@xtingray | If this components exist, the players and plugins of the open format will born in several languages quickly, cause all the specifications will be public. |
@xtingray | Nice dream, right? Is in this moment, when people always ask me: "pretty, but what the hell are you |
@xtingray | doing to make that dream comes true?"... then, i SMILe :) |
@xtingray | Some years ago, with the incredible support of Toonka Films (http://www.toonka.com), we started an open source project called "KToon". |
@xtingray | In that time, the project follow the same vision that Synfig does, i mean: to create a 2D Animation Toolkit for professional animators. |
@xtingray | KToon is software covered under the terms of the GNU GPL license, and it is developed using: |
@xtingray | GNU c++, Qt and OpenGL. |
@xtingray | In the moment, we just have a version of the code for GNU/Linux, but it can |
@xtingray | be ported to Windows and MacOS systems with no problem. |
@xtingray | We have not do it already, because we |
@xtingray | have no licenses and hardware available for these platforms. Donations are welcome ;) |
@xtingray | With the months, we got a lot of mails from people asking for SWF features and for Adobe Flash options... |
@xtingray | A month ago, the development team of KToon decided to redefine the vision of the application, and to bring it to the multimedia area. |
@xtingray | This does not mean that KToon is getting far away of the 2D animation world, even more, 2D animation is part of the multimedia area. |
@xtingray | With this decision, we are just expanding the goals of our project to a very high level. |
@xtingray | We understand the complexity of our vision, and for this reason, we know that we need the help of |
@xtingray | the open source community. So, in some sense, this speech is a way to invite you to join our project. The multimedia age for KToon is just starting, so there is everything to do. |
@xtingray | The official KToon website is: http://ktoon.toonka.com, where you can find the source code of the |
@xtingray | project and others resources as mail lists, young documentation and forums. |
@xtingray | By now, we are planning and designing the general architecture for KToon, based on the model i explained before. This are some of the points we are developing currently: |
@xtingray | - KTN: The persistence format for multimedia files (*.ktn). |
@xtingray | - SMIL: The output format for display multimedia files (*.smil). |
@xtingray | - KToonScript: The multimedia scripting language (the replacement for ActionScript). |
@xtingray | - Python: Research about pyQt and the posibility to include it as an extension language. |
@xtingray | - Squeak: Research about Squeak architecture, looking for common elements with KToon. |
@xtingray | As you can see, there is a lot of job to do. So, if you are a programmer or end user of multimedia |
@xtingray | software and you want to join to the KToon world... everyone's invited. |
@xtingray | Thanks for your attention :) |
