* ogra steps up on the stage and taps on the microphone ... |
@ogra | welcome everybody |
@ogra | so let me tell something about edubuntu ... |
@ogra | oh, and i should probably introduce myself first |
@ogra | i'm a ubuntu developer, employed by canonical LTD since about 7 months ow |
@ogra | *now |
@ogra | about 2 months after i was hired, my boss mark shuttleworth called me and asked if i'd like to work on a educational flavour of ubuntu ... |
@ogra | indeed i said yes, since one of my biggest dreams for life was to once build a distro on my own |
@ogra | i had worked about 10 years with handicaped and dying people as well as handicapped children before i went into computer business, so an educacional flavour was fitting fine into my lifeline |
@MJesus | welcome Oliver |
@ogra | we went to bergen to a skolelinux summit (very technical, but i learned the basics i needed to know) and held our own summit four weeks later with a lot of teachers and other edu distro admins (many spainsh people btw) |
@ogra | thats the history how all this started :) |
@ogra | during this summit we decided about the initial app selection we wanted to have in the distro (sadly we are limited by CD size) and what we would consider the added value for educational puposes over ubuntu |
@ogra | at the same time my CTO matt zimmerman who worked very tight with the guys from the linux termial server project wrote a completely new implementation of ltsp ... |
@ogra | which the ltsp people will adopt as ltsp 4.2 |
@ogra | ltsp is a very good way to recycle old pc hardware and since our main focus was on schools with less money, we decidec to "wrap" our distro around this feature |
@ogra | indeed it should not be limited to an ltsp server even if thats the default install, so i included an install option called "workstation" to enable students and teachers to test the distro at home ... |
@ogra | ,,, adn to benefit from the included educational apps indeed |
@ogra | the initial set of educational apps we selected was mainly gcompris, a well known educational suite for kids, |
@ogra | most of the kdeedus suite that has no equivalent in gnome ... |
@ogra | and the tux4kids apps ... |
@ogra | additionally, since we have a server side in edubuntu, schooltool (www.schooltool.org) a calendaring and course management server is included by default |
@ogra | we planned to include moodle as well, since its very famous in the educational sector, but the app had a bug that prevented it from direct inclusion on the CD |
@ogra | so only the perparation was made , moodle users have to install it separately post install (this will change with the next release) |
@ogra | indeed we want to attract young people, so our artwork (icons wallpaper) looks a bit younger than the ubuntu one |
@ogra | the wallpaper itself was selected by our community members who voted for their favorite one on art.ubuntu.com |
@ogra | (you can see a screenshot on page 3 in the pdf) |
@ogra | the kdeedu apps are rather for mid aged students containing chemistry or geomatry apps |
@ogra | (screenshots on page 4) |
@ogra | gcompris rather targets the younger ones (even if i play it myself sometimes and i'm 35) ;) |
@ogra | as well as the tux4kids apps do (see page 5) |
@ogra | during our conference in sydeney (just before i was hired by canonical) makr and matt were approached by the creator of k12ltsp ... |
@ogra | thats a distro that installs a ltsp classrom setup as well ... they wanted to base their distro on ubuntu rathe than fedora |
@ogra | so we tried to target especially these admins/teachers with our first release ... |
@ogra | we wanted to enable normal teachers to do a install without having a steep learning curve |
@ogra | a mailing list and development/support channel was created and shortly after release we jumped on a high place on distrowatch |
@ogra | slowly more developers came in and we are a bunch now (my dream is to be able to concentrate more on the technical part and give away more responsibilities) |
@ogra | the last realease was meainly a one man show, but this changed during the last months, so if you are intreasted, subscribe to the list or jump into the #edubuntu channel on irc.freenode.net |
@ogra | edubuntu is completely developed inside of ubuntu, so we are bound to all decisions made there ... |
@ogra | the release schedule for example ... |
@ogra | or the decisiona that our next release will be supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server |
@ogra | so for stabilitys sake we wont make much changed this next release, but polish up everything we have |
@ogra | we have sound on the thin clients already in the development version, local devices will be supported and everything will be beautified :) |
@ogra | the thin clients should boot in less than 30 seconds (curretn release boots in 90) |
@ogra | we will have three instead of one theme options to trget also older students this time ... |
@ogra | and you will be able to use i386 clients on amd64 servers which wasnt possible in the current reelase ... |
@ogra | so if you are intrested, www.edubuntu.org is our website, irc.freenode.net #edubuntu is our channel and http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/edubuntuÂdevel |
@ogra | gives you acces to the mailing list |
@ogra | we have a growing documentation team that cares for wiki.edubuntu.org |
@ogra | and our central development tool in ubuntu, the launchpad now also has several groups for edubuntu docteams, developers and artworkers ... |
@ogra | https://launchpad.net/people/edubuntu/+join |
@ogra | holds the man group |
@ogra | so this was my talk, feel free to bomb me with questions now ;) |
@ogra | oh i forgot, edubuntu isos are available via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/releases/breezy/release/ and in several online shops |
@ogra | http://wiki.edubuntu.org/GettingEdubuntu |
@MJesus | thank you very much!! |
@MJesus | question could be now, here, if you like |
