huw-l | presumably that means technical decisions in fedora are always taken by the RH folks rather than the community at large? |
gianni | There are lots of projects derived from Debian, will Fedora Foundation audit any projects derived from Fedora? |
riel | what do you mean by "audit" in this question ? |
warren | gianni, good question, please ask a bit later |
riel | warren: we can always cut'n'paste it into #linux later and answer when it is a good time ;) |
gianni | warren: Ok. |
gregdek | Yeah. Don't ask it again. :) |
gianni | Ok |
hlen | For Section 3: RH as a company never really got into Debian-like `live-upgrades'. that's a major disadvantage for users imo. i've seen mailing list postings suggesting it might not be hard to pull that out with yum for FC 5. is that so? |
gregdek | hlen: We'll grab that one in a bit too. |
ChitleshG | 3) Release Early, Release Often : what about firefox 1.5, gnome 2.13.3 and kde 3.5 ? |
spot | we're at ff 1.5, gnome 2.13.4, and kde 3.5.0 in rawhide |
ChitleshG | and for FC4? |
mether | and gnome 2.13 is a development release and shouldnt be pushed into FC4 or 3 to avoid being breakage |
gregdek | We'll get to these on the channel. |
* spot apologizes for answering in the wrong place |
ChitleshG | ok. |
ChitleshG | by the way Im on rawhide :) |
* spot is as well. :) |
spot | well, almost. i'm a few days back because of gcj (damned java!) |
hlen | gredgek, that's the question.. this was always possible in that sense. i'm wondering if FC's attitude about that is bound to change in the future? |
riel | hlen: sometimes configuration files need to be changed - the package that does that is the installer |
riel | if you upgrade packages, you may need to do some of those config changes by hand |
offray | RH/Fedora and SuSE/OpenSuse are examples of comunity projects around enterprise initiatives, but there are others like Ubuntu/Debian that seems the other way instead. Both models are valid, but those where comunity is the core seem more democratic and more versatile. ¿What do you think about it? |

riel | offray: I'll try to answer that question in a bit - lets wait for gregdek to talk about the various Fedora projects |
hlen | riel, well, Debian deals with it. it makes me worried that this doesn't seem to have a high enough priority in FC. i wish you guys would say: it's not perfect now, but we aim to make it stable. you can try. we're developing. your answers seem too `conformed' to me. |
mether | hlen, Its definitely getting better in every release. However there is a inherent danger in it which cannot be taken away. for example /dev to udev or LVM1 to LVM2 conversion. The latest debian distribution upgrade process had some issues too IIRC. Regardless of this if there are any actual bugs found during the upgrade process feel free to report them. |
mether | hlen, they should be fixed |
hlen | mether, ok =) |
offray | ¿How do you think that ideas from one project (Fedora OpenSuSE, Ubuntu) can be in another without reinventing the wheel all the time (for exampl Yum apt or Yast4Debian, etc.). We will see more interdistro cooperation? |
mether | hlen, historically live upgrades have been very different from the installer. However the installer in FC5 uses yum as a backend which makes the deviation much less. Less special cases in the installer means that live upgrades tend to work better now |
hlen | mether, cool! |
hlen | and adding to offray's question, i'd like to ask if there has been any interest by FC leaders in the `package repository metadata' project, at http://linux.duke.edu/projects/metadata/ |
ignacio | yum already uses it. |
hlen | wow =) |
boldstrik | i'ver read that some people have succeeded in using both rpm and deb files in a single distro. does fedora see this as a good direction to move in for the future? |
gianni | So will it be possible to update a whole distribution release with YUM in the upcoming Fedoras? |
gianni | Will be encouraged? |
ovidiu | Following the recent moves towards Fedora's rebranding (i.e. the new logo), will there be any other to shape Fedora's own identity apart from RHEL's? Especially at the desktop look and feel level. |
gianni | Will be possible to fetch updated packages from installation time, then? |
gianni | warren et al: I guess saying *cool* is in order |
gianni | Is the Foundation the one responsible for the Fedora Use Guidelines? |
gianni | What would a reasonable time-frame be for an updated Guidelines? |
warren | gianni, I am curious, why are you interested in updating the guidelines? |
gianni | warren, there's a thread about this on the Marketing list, I'm Gian Paolo Mureddu, and am interested in comercializing systems with Fedora Core + [selected] Extras in them |
boldstrik | interesting conference guys, thanks |
boldstrik | gianni...great question |
warren | gianni, please be patient, we're working on it |
gianni | I trust there'll be a trascript or log for this? I had a bit of trouble with my backspace key and Firefox, LOL |
riel | gianni: I think the Umeet organization posts transcripts of all talks |
gianni | Thanks riel. |
MJesus_ | yes |
boldstrik | yes |
mether | gianni, http://umeet.uninet.edu/umeet2005/english/prog.html |
gianni | I guess I have a bunch of questions, just have to organize them and priorize them :) |
gianni | Thanks, mether. |
boldstrik | i'd be interested in getting involved in the marketing side of the fedora distro. what work needs to be done here? |
pastorjoh | Listening guys, and learning, and finding things very interesting. |
ignacio | Join the marketing list, and check out the marketing section of the wiki. |
mether | gianni, http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing/. there are general pointers here. post to the fedora-marketing list for more. |
boldstrik | ignacio...i will |
boldstrik | thanks mether |
gianni | I will, mether. |
gianni | Thank youl |
gianni | you* |
offray | What is modular X? |
hlen | good question. X was always modular afaik |
ignacio | No, X is/was monolithic. Everything comes in one big tarball. |
ignacio | 7.0 has server, drivers, libraries, etc. in separate tarballs and CVS trees. |
hlen | ah.. `modular X packaging' then? |
ignacio | Yes. |
offray | Thanks :) |
ignacio | With modular X when a driver needs an upgrade or patch you don't have to rebuild and distribute the *whole* thing, just that single driver. |
hlen | can X handle loading/unloading of modules on the fly? no, i think.. at first i thought that's what they meant |
ignacio | No, but that's another issue. |
hlen | indeed |
offray | About the Foundation: How can Fedora will confront the forces of being at the same time a more democratic project with the clasic discussions in all democracies (and eventualy burocracy) and at the same time be a agile project with releases and so on? |
ignacio | That would be something to post to the marketing list. |
