Telepathology: our experience between INTERNET and ISDN.

Resumen

We have developed a system of acquisition of macroscopic and microscopic pathological images for consultation, documentation and research along with a system of transmission in INTERNET and ISDN for exchanges of cases at a remote distant site.

Our hardware includes a microscope LEICA DM RB adapted for macro reproduction (macrodual zoom), a telecamera 3 CCD color (SONY DXC-950P), a portable computer EXTENSA 570 CDT (Texas Instrument) PC pentium, 40 Mb RQAM with hard disc 1Gb, reader for CD ROM and card PMCIA (32bit) for connection via INTERNET; this computer is connected by local network to a second computer PC pentium 32 Mb RAM with hard disc 2Gb, screen VGA 17", reader of CD ROM, master CD-Writer 6020i (Hewlett-Packard) and card for telephone communication Numeris, for connection type Euro ISDN (S O). The two computers are connected to a printer and a scanner and between them having the possibility to transfer and share files.

The availability of both of the modalities of communication via INTERNET and ISDN has permitted us a direct comparison for the evaluation of use of different applications that we have developed (multimedial archives of cases, consultations, policentric specific researches, clinico-pathologic studies).

The technology utilized has been particularly useful for cases of pigmented lesions of the skin sent for consultation to the Referral Center for Pigmented Lesions of the Skin of our department.
