Abdominal obesity predicts the metabolic syndrome
The San Antonio Heart Study evaluated the association between high waist circumference at baseline ( cm [ᡠ in] in men and ᢐ cm [ᡛ in] in women) and the 8-year incidence of the metabolic syndrome in a population of 628 non-Hispanic white subjects and 1340 Mexican Americans. Patients were also stratified for BMI.
Waist circumference was predictive of the incidence of the metabolic syndrome, independent of the level of BMI.
