The sockets are the faster API. But, unfortunately it does not exist
a sockets port to Fortran. It is fully portable between Unix platforms;
but it has incompatibilities between Unix sockets and Windows sockets
and problems with data encoding between
different architectures. Anyway, pairs sprintf
and sscanf can save the
day, sending in ASCII 7 bits, because ASCII is now a standard.
